Overheard in Portland, Travel Edition: “до свидания.“

Blue Scorcher Bakery, Duane Street |Astoria, Oregon

Sunday, Jan 26 | 12:15 p.m.

Spoken by an elderly woman in a jean skirt, knee-high socks, brown boots and a turquoise knit sweater to her dining companions, whilst polishing off a bran muffin and a mug of coffee.

“I’ve always wanted to learn Russian. I think it’s a beautiful language. Yeah. That’d be fun. The young man who came and installed the windows, he was Russian. Igor. And it just came to mind when he said goodbye, I said, “Do svidaniya.” That means goodbye! I didn’t even know Russian! I just said it!”
